The Lord commanded Jonah to go to Nineveh and cry against them for their wickedness. (Jonah 1:1-2)
Jonah tried to avoid The Lord by going to Tarshish. At Tarshish, Jonah boarded a ship. While on the ship, The Lord sent a great wind upon the sea. To calm the wind, Jonah offered to be thrown overboard. Once Jonah was in the sea, the winds calmed which made everyone fear The Lord. (Jonah 1:3-16)
The Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. (Jonah 1:17)
Jonah was inside of the great fish for three days. (Jonah 1:17)
Jonah prayed to The Lord to get out of the fish. The Lord made the fish vomit Jonah onto land. (Jonah 2)
The Lord appeared to Jonah again and told him to go to Nineveh. This time, Jonah obeyed. (Jonah 3:1-3)
Jonah entered Nineveh and preached. He told the people of Nineveh that in 40 days the city would be overthrown. All the people of Nineveh believed in God, proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth. The Lord saw their works, and that they turned from their evil ways, so He did no evil. (Jonah 3:4-10)
Jonah was angry that The Lord repented of His wrath. (Jonah 4:1)
During Jonah's anger, he said it was better for him to die than to live. This caused The Lord to discipline Jonah. The Lord made a gourd to cast shadow upon Jonah's head. Then The Lord prepared a worm the next day to smote the gourd. The beating of the sun on the head of Jonah caused him to faint. The Lord explained this was punishment for Jonah being angry at The Lord. (Jonah 4:2-11)
God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversary, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth. The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea , the world, and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him. The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
Nahum 1:2-8
